  • 2026 Big Brain Award

We have a winner, following a surprising and eventful draft in The Burg. Here are the final scores:

    • drock: 8 points
    • TomPaulBillyBob: 7 points
    • copanut: 5 points
    • Eleven: 3 points
    • MWalsh26: 3 points
    • Earl: 1 point
    • EstimatedProphet: 0 points
    • JAMESH: -10 points (non-participation non-award)

Drock had two correct picks in the correct round (Bernard and Allar), plus two positional picks. TPBB had a great run, scoring points in five of the first six picks, including Allar in round 3. Eleven correctly picked Bernard in the second round, but crapped out otherwise.

EstimatedProphet completely whiffed, but not to be entirely humiliated, he scores a participation award, leaving JAMESH dead last.

Good job, gentlemen! Now let’s see what our new coach has in store for us!

p.s., I may never forgive Omar for passing on Don Corleone. Even if he turns out not to be a good NT, we could have had a lot of fun with that.

  • Draft Time, Nyuk Nyuk, 2026

It’s that time of year. April 23rd, NFL draft day, and this time it’s being held in the Football Capital of the World.

You have up until the day before the draft to produce your predictions: have your predictions in no later than midnight ET, April 22nd. If you submit a mock earlier than that, you may edit the mock up until the deadline (e.g., in the event of a signing or trade that wrecks your initial mock).

Please use the following format as a template. Any deviation from this format that causes me to have to interpret your gibberish will result in unfavorable scoring, so beware.

Round (Pick) – Position, Name, School
    1 (21) –
    2 (53) –
    3 (76) –
    3 (85) –
    3 (99) –
    4 (121) –
    4 (135) –
    5 (161) –
    6 (216) –
    7 (224) –
    7 (230) –
    7 (237) –

    Add up to five UDFAs.
    List any predicted trades.

Given the large number of Steelers picks this year, I’m limiting submissions to only one mock.

    Scoring summary:

    • Correct name and round: 3 points
    • Correct name only: 2 points
    • Correct position and round: 1 points
    • Correct UDFA name: 1 point

    Trade prediction bonus points:

    • Correct trade partner (e.g. trade with Raiders): 2 points
    • Correct trade position (e.g., trade 2nd round pick): 2 points
    • Correct partner, Steelers position, and partner’s position: 5 points

    Good luck, ladies and gentlemen…

  • Out with the old, in with the new!

I asked myself, why should Art Rooney have all the fun? If he can go shopping for a head coach after 19 years, why can’t we shop for a new web site after a dozen?

Actually, the site needed to be updated due to technology changes on the hosting side which were incompatible with our site’s theme and also the news feed plugin. Further, our site was rather dated in construction and was non-responsive, meaning it did not adjust to different screen sizes. This current update addresses both motivations.

The general site structure and functions are unchanged: posts to the left, and chat and news to the right. The overall look is streamlined, but similar, and I think you will find it easy to adapt to the new design.

That said, there are a few changes to note:

    • The news feed has been consolidated into a single feed with multiple tabs. Also, the “Global Steelers Village” feed that had been a sticky post on the left now has its own tab with the other feeds.
    • The Steelers Info Zone post now provides links that don’t gobble up display space. It’s now easy to toggle between schedule, live game trackers, current scores, etc., easily.
    • The site is now responsive to different screen sizes. Back when we started, smart phones were barely a thing and so the site was designed strictly for a computer desktop, but this made it difficult to navigate on a tablet or phone.
    • By default, on a mobile phone, the site will show the most recent posts, starting with the pinned “Info Zone” post. To switch to Chat, just click on the “Mobile Chat” option in the Info Zone, or drop down the menu at the top and select it from there.
    • To get back to the default view, click the Steelers logo at the top.
    • A Unix time stamp has been added to chat messages (in parentheses). This will make it easy to identify a particular message across time zones.
    • You can now read the chat without logging in (read only – to post a message you need to be logged in).
    • The site is now more readable in “night mode”.

    I hope you like it!

    UPDATE:

Important note: The first time you log in to this new site, it will take a long time (up to a full minute) to complete. After that, it will be fast. Enter your username and password, click Login, and then go get yourself a coffee. There may be some hiccups with this, and we’re not done (I’m moving the site off of GoDaddy, which will take some time), but anyone who has any problems should email me at copanut@pub.thenetmail.com.

  • Who will be the Steelers next head coach?

    Make your pick:

    1. Marcus Freeman, Notre Dame head coach (39 years old)
    2. Brian Flores, Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator (44)
    3. Jesse Minter, Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator (42) => RAVENS
    4. Klint Kubiak, Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator (38)
    5. Arthur Smith, Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator (43)
    6. Vance Joseph, Denver Broncos defensive coordinator (53)
    7. Mike McCarthy, former Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers head coach (62)  <<====
    8. Chris Shula, Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator (39)
    9. Robert Saleh, San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator (46) => TITANS
    10. Mike LaFleur, Rams offensive coordinator (38)
    11. Antwaan Randle El, Bears assistant head coach and receivers coach (46)
    12. Nate Scheelhasse, Rams offensive assistant and passing game specialist (35)
    13. Bill Cowher, former Steelers HC, CBS analyst, and Carlynton superjock (68)
    14. Curt Cignetti, Indiana Hoosiers HC (64)
    15. Kevin Stefanski, unemployed (43) => to FALCONS
    16. John Harbaugh, unemployed (63)  => to GIANTS
    17. Matt Canada, unemployed and unemployable (53)

  • Fickle Finger 2025 Winner

A wild and crazy season can only be concluded with a wild and crazy finish to the Fickle Finger contest. In this year’s contest, we had three contestants who correctly predicted the final total of Steelers wins: Eleven, Earl, and Tuskeegee_Brown, which earned them each a bonus point. However, Drock trumped them all with more accurate divisional predictions, proving that it’s rarely a successful strategy to expect good results from the Ravens or Bengals, and always a good strategy to expect a faceplant by the Browns. So, this year’s winner is Drock.

Scoring Copanut TPBB drock Walsh Eleven Earl EP TB GPT
    Steelers 2 1 1 3 0 0 2 0 2
    Ravens 3 3 3 4 4 4 6 4 4
    Bengals 3 3 3 4 5 4 5 3 4
    Browns 2 1 0 1 0 1 1 2 2
    Bonus -1 -1 -1
    Total 10 8 7 12 8 8 14 8 12

But the story doesn’t end there! An honorable mention has to go to Eleven, who had four dead-on predictions. Not only did he perfectly predict Steelers and Browns win totals, he also nailed two tie-breakers: the number of games not started by Aaron Rodgers (1) and total team sacks (48). Unfortunately, the tiebreakers didn’t come into play this year, but it’s still a noteworthy achievement. Also, special props go to Earl, who made the best record of game by game predictions, hitting an amazing 14 out of 17.

Scoring Copanut TPBB drock Walsh Eleven Earl EP TB GPT
    Games not started by AR 2 1 2 4 0 5 7 1 1
    Total team sacks 5 4 13 3 0 3 6 3 3
    Total touchdown passes 6 5 2 1 4 2 5 3 2
    Total Tiebreakers 13 10 17 8 4 10 18 7 6

  • An ayahuasca chant to guide Aaron to the Super Bowl…

We sailed up a river wide as a sea
    And slept on the banks
On the leaves of a banyan tree
And all of these spirit voices rule the night

Some stories are magical, meant to be sung
Songs from the mouth of the river
    When the world was young
And all of these spirit voices rule the night

    By moon
    We walk
    To the brujo’s door
Along a path of river stones
    Women with their nursing children
    Seated on the floor
    We join the fevers
    And the broken bones

    The candlelight flickers
    The falcon calls
A lime-green lizard scuttles down the cabin wall
And all of these spirit voices
    Sing rainwater, seawater
    River water, holy water
Wrap this child in mercy – heal her
    Heaven’s only daughter
All of these spirit voices rule the night

    My hands were numb
    And my feet were lead
I drank a cup of herbal brew
Then the sweetness in the air
Combined with the lightness in my head
And I heard the jungle breathing in the bamboo

    Saudocões (Greetings!)
Da licenca um momento (Excuse me, one moment)
    Te lembró (I remind you)
    Que amanhã (That tomorrow)
Será tudo ou será naoa (It will be all or it will be nothing)
    Depende coração (It depends, heart)
Será breve ou será grande (It will be brief or it will be great)
Depende da paixão (It depends on the passion)
Será sujo, será sonho (It will be dirty, it will be a dream)
    Cuidado, coração (Be careful, heart)
Será util, será tarde (It will be useful, it will be late)
Se esmera, coração (Do your best, heart)
    E confia (And have trust)
Na força do amanhã (In the power of tomorrow)

    Lord of the earthquake
    My trembling bed
    The spider resumes the rhythm
    Of its golden thread

And all of these spirit voices rule the night
And all of these spirit voices rule the night
And all of these spirit voices rule the night

  • 2025 Big Brain Award

I’ll keep this brief because I’m way behind after my trip, and I don’t want to keep you waiting any longer. Here are the final tallies for our draft contest:

    • MWalsh26-1: 6 points
    • Eleven-1, Eleven-2, drock-1 and EstimatedProphet-2: 5 points
    • drock-1: 4 points
    • copanut-1 and copanut-2: 3 points
    • TomPaulBillyBob and MWalsh26-2: 2 points
    • EstimatedProphet-1: 1 point

I have to say, we all acquitted ourselves well, certainly better than the national talking heads. Unlike them, we at least understood the real priorities for the team, and were well acquainted with the strengths and weaknesses of the players on the board. Every single one of us had at least one draft with one of the big DLs as the first pick, between Harmon and Grant. Personally, I picked Grant on the assumption that Harmon would already be gone, otherwise Harmon would have been my choice. We all picked an RB high, though none of us got the right one. We were all looking for a project QB, generally at value positions. Most of us picked a double-dip at DL. Several of us correctly predicted the trade of George Pickens for draft stock, although we were a week ahead of our time.

Well done, gents, and congratulations to MWalsh26 for being the master of his domain.

p.s. Please review your scores for potential mistakes. Next year, I’ll endeavor to revise the rules to make them less error prone, because frankly, scoring this way is a PIA and not a good fit for my dubious skill set, like Mike Tomlin with the challenge flag.

    UPDATE:

Eleven pointed out that I scored differently this year. He’s right – I did it in a rush to get it off my plate. I suggested that using the historical method would not significantly impact the results since the same rules apply to everyone, and it turns out I was wrong. For clarity, this is the scoring system:

    • 2 point – Correct name (drafted)
    • 1 points – Correct name (UDFA)
    • 1 point – Correct position/round
    • 3 points – Correct name AND correct position/round

Note that the position/round assessment is for anywhere in the round, and not necessarily the original pick number. Thus all of us who selected DL for pick 156 still got credit even though the actual pick came at 164 due to a trade. This still counted as a hit because either pick fell in the 5th round.

Here are the revised results using the historical methodology:

    • Walsh-1: 9
    • drock-1 and EstimatedProphet-2: 8
    • Eleven-1 and Eleven-2: 7
    • drock-2: 5
    • copanut-1 and copanut-2: 3
    • MWAlsh26-2 and TomPaulBillyBob: 2
    • EstimatedProphet-1: 1

The winner did not change, so I was correct as far as that went, however this methodology does provide some clarity for second place, as it pushed Eleven from a tie for second down into third place. I guess the lesson is be careful what you wish for!

However, as consolation, I make the observation that Eleven had a great run with points for each of his first four picks, which nobody else was able to do – not even our resident brain, MWalsh26. That’s pretty impressive.
